This December LL Cool J will become the first hip hop artist to receive a Kennedy Center Honor. The honor celebrates individuals in the performing arts and pop culture for their lifetime contributions to American culture. Previous recipients of the honor include Tina Turner, Oprah Winfrey, Diana Ross, Cicely Tyson and Aretha Franklin.
The awards ceremony will take place Sunday, December 3rd, and preceding the ceremony honorees which also include Gloria Estefan, Lionel Richie, Norman Lear will be celebrated at invite only Chairman’s Luncheon, State Department dinner, White House reception hosted by the president and first lady) and the Honors gala performances and supper at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC.
“To be able to come from the corner of Farmers Boulevard in Queens, banging on a garbage can, all the way to the Kennedy Center Honors, that’s a long journey.” LL said about being chosen to receive the Kennedy Center Honor.Speaking on receiving the honor during the Trump administration, LL said, “I don’t have any stunts planned. I’m not saying I need to be there backslapping and all of that, but this time, this one ain’t about him. I’m not going to block my blessings or let the political divide stop me from embracing my art. I’m banking on the goodness and the optimism of people to say: ‘You know what? I get it. Let this guy have this honor.'”
