In closing out Black Music Month The ASCAP helped honor and celebrate black music by honoring Usher and Kendrick Lamar at the 2013 ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards which took place at The Beverly Hilton Hotel on Thursday (June 27) in Beverly Hills, Calif.
Usher who was joined by singer-songwriter Ne-Yo and record exec L.A. Reid received Golden Note Award stating, “I take the art of songwriting and music-making very seriously, so to be given the ASCAP Golden Note Award from an organization of my fellow music creators is a huge honor.” “I’ve been blessed to have such a wonderful career, working with some of the most talented people in the business, and I am just getting started!” he added.
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs also stepped up to the podium to speak a few words about first meeting a teenage Usher, and mentoring him addressing talk that he introduced the young singer to an adult lifestyle at a much to early age, offering an apology to Usher’s mother.
Dr. Dre was on hand to pass the torch in a sense to Kendrick Lamar as he awarded the fellow Compton bred rapper Lamar the Vanguard Award. “Kendrick Lamar is a class act,” said Dre as presented his protege with the award. “I’m proud to know him. I’m proud to work with him and he is an important part of the new generation of hip-hop, and it’s definitely continuing the legacy of Compton.”
